Preparing to Paint our Canvas

As the weeks have gone on, more and more children have expressed an interest in returning to silhouettes. In an effort to encourage dimension with the project, Brigitte and I thought it would be a good time to introduce the idea of a theater/ puppet show. We began on Monday with a discussion of using a large canvas board as a background.
Elena: Does anyone know what this is behind me? (gestures to canvas) Can you guess?
Lochie: A board?  A wrapped up board
CC: A big board
George: A huge board
Marley: A paint board
Elena: Can you say more about that Marley? What’s a paint board?
Marley: I don’t know.
Lochie: A paint board…
Cc: A paint board is we paint on it
Elena: What would you suggest we paint?

Towards the end, we found our most solid idea which is a painted underwater background complete with dolphins, sharks, jellyfishes and the like. This was inspired in part by the clay sea sculptures above the Tucker door that we chat about often.

Elle: (spots the dolphin silhouette on the wall) Dolphin, dolphin, dolphin!
CC, Marley, Elle: ooooh in the water!
Elena: Could this be an underwater background?
George: Ooooooh! With a shark!
Elle: We can get blue paint and paint background and then we can add the dolphins
CC: But you can’t see the dolphins because the sea is blue and the dolphins
Brigitte: Ooh so how can we fix that?
CC: lots of colors! green water and blue dolphins
Lochie: Blue and green!
Jack: Maybe some purple?
Lochie: There’s sand at the bottom
Marley: There’s coral and sand
Elle: Fishies!

Today we took time to look at the documentation from Tucker Room’s undersea mural project. We visited it, and then scoped out our own first draft with tape on the canvas.

George: There could be the underwater vehicle!
Lochie: Maybe we should do two underwater vehicles. I want light and dark blue colors in the ocean.
Marley: Let’s put the sand here

Tomorrow we will visit Hyde Elementary’s Undersea Mural for more ideas! Check out some additional photos of the day below!
