Can you believe it's already Thursday? Where has the time gone? Today we continued our investigation of color through our research of cockatoos, Jordan's symbol.  Yesterday the children got the chance to use Google and YouTube to watch age appropriate videos about the brightly colored Australian and African birds. We ended the day practicing our teamwork with a group puzzle!

“We can watch a video and see more and more and hundreds of cockatoos” Maxon
"I notice we never saw that one before (about an African Cockatoo on Google” Janie
"These are different kinds of cockatoos. It's cool" Sylvie researching cockatoos on Google

Today, we used the cockatoo pictures we researched as inspiration for our work with pastels and colored pencils. We made it outside to enjoy the playground before the rain hit (phew) and began our exploration of light and shadow by visiting the light tables and seeing how light affected different surfaces.

Conversation starts the day...

Jordan: "Are we going to have a good or bad day (thumb up or thumb down)?"
Janie presents a thumbs down.
Melanie: "Why is it going to be a bad day?"
Janie:" It's a rainy day."
Giacomo: "I didn't see the rain".
Janie: " I did see the rain because it was raining."
Maxon: "I didn't see the rain because I was really fast asleep".
Janie: I like playing in the rain."
Melanie: "Oh? Did you not get to play in the rain long enough?"

Janie: "I was crying in my bed and then I went to Mommy and Daddy."
Maxon: "Why were you crying in your bed? Were you scared?"
Janie: "I was crying because it was dark."
Maxon: And then he (dad) got you a night light?"
Later - "Can you take a picture of the darkness?" -Janie

Yesterday a brief conversation about darkness:
“Darkness is like when you turn off the light and there is no more brightness.” -Janie
“Darkness is when you turn out the light.” -Lucia
“I have darkness at my house and sometimes I make birthday parties.”  -Sylvie
“Sometimes there is darkness in my house because when I turn off the lights there is darkness behind my bed and I go, ‘Aaaa, Mommy! Daddy!’”   -Janie

How might "the darkness" influence photography?
Beginning to explore taking pictures...
