A Developing Interest in Mythological Creatures

"Are they real or not?" -Janie

1 Eye or 100 Eyes:

Exploring what is mythology and various mythological creatures
"The body is so small and the head is SO big! Because he has 100 eyes. Like if I only had 1 eye and if one of my eyes fell out, I'd have none eyes. (referencing Argus)" -Jack

Giacomo: Are those the mythology books? (referencing a section of the book shelf)
Elyse: How do we know these are mythology books?
Lochie: Put all the papers together to make a board.
Jack: Write all the letters to write mythology.
C.C: Put the sign on the book space.
Nora: We don't know how to read.
Jack: We could draw a picture; if we can't read the letters we can draw a picture.
"If you cut off one head, two grow back." (referencing Hydra) -Jack
"I know, I know! Pegasus is Medusa's mom." -Nora
Melanie: I have a question. What is mythology?
Jack: I't's about Greeking out.
Giacomo: It's not just Greece.

Roll out the corrugated cardboard! Paper Exploration and Birthdays on the way...

"Boxitects!" exclaimed several children regarding which book to read. At the end of Boxitects, the author addresses why cardboard is so extraordinary, referencing cardboard boxes being made from corrugated cardboard, and concluding with a definition of corrugated: "Corrugated mean s there is a piece of folded material sandwiched between two flat pieces of the same material." So we brought out an extraordinary roll of corrugated cardboard for the children to experience.

One side is bumpy...  "The other side is soft." -C.C
In association with our birthday calendar (and daily calendar) discussion, we will commence a year long paper exploration as the foundational language and material for birthday gifts. Corrugated cardboard kicked off the paper exploration today and Nora's birthday on September 25th will kick off our birthday celebration. Between now and then we have more paper to explore and a gift to create!
A brief discussion about birthdays:
Elyse: How do we celebrate birthdays at St. Johns?
Nora: You walk around the candle, blow it out, and you get a present.
Sylvie: And you visit mommy and daddy on the computer.
Lochie: You read a story
Janie: You can get donuts or cupcakes.
Elle: You can get dessert.
Elyse: Who makes your gift?
Elle: Our classmates
Giacomo: The birthday people
Janie: our best friends.
Melanie: What is a birthday?
Jack: To celebrate when you were born
Nora: To celebrate the day when you were born.
Lochie: It's a party and it's fun.
