RAINEY ROOM B:

From Cockatoos to Color Mixing to Sing Along and Shadows

Monday, September 14, 2020

Jordan: "What differences do you see?"
Maxon
: " It has white hair. ... On the other I saw gray then I saw blue and then caught blue and then brown blue."
Lucia: "This one is yellow and white."
Janie: They have feathers. Birds have different feathers."
Jane: That one has red under its eye."
Giacomo: "That one is black and that one has white on his back."
Our initial inquiries into the cockatoo brought attention to the different colors of their feathers, and other physical details. This seemed like a natural segue into mixing paint colors inspired by the observed colors of their plumage.
"I love mixing paint." -Sylvie

"I love mixing paint," said Sylvie as we introduced the color mixing work for the day. "Me too," said Maxon and Giacomo. Then Lucia asked, "What will we paint on?"

As the paint mixing process got underway, we were began with a jar, filled with a small amount of red paint because to much paint would make our jar overflow. Once we had the red paint in the jar, we wondered what will happen if we add white paint. "It might change into a different color," Sylvie offered , "We need to just do it and see," she concluded.
"I made more purple!" -Lucia

Sing Along Leads to a Conversation About Shadows:

Janie: Look at Maxon's hand.
Cedar: Why is no one playing?"
Giacomo: Why is it bigger? (one shadow of a hand over another).
Jordan: Why is whose hand bigger?
Giacomo: Maxon's hand.
Melanie: What's happening?
Maxon: What's happening?
Giacomo: The light could be...

Maxon: The light is changing the yellow shadows. We must change the lights! Maybe we could change the lights. And that would make more shadows! If you push one of those buttons, it could turn on, it could turn on more lights. (referring to the projector and projector light).  We could put on more lights.
Melanie: What if we turn off the light in here? Does that change things?
Giacomo: There is not enough dark. ... Those (the blinds) are not open enough... Closed enough.
Melanie: You were asking about darkness, remember Janie.
Janie: There is a change... there's a darkness in here.

RAINEY ROOM A:

How Can We Make An Obstacle Course?

“Blocks and Wood!”  -George

“But not scratchy wood, maybe pink dots?” -CC
Last week we explored connecting and building with our use of thread, tubes and wire. This week, while we started down that same path, we came to a slightly different iteration.
At both the playground and inside our classroom, we’ve been working on building obstacle courses that allow us to move around the space even when “the floor is lava!”
Picture
In our outdoor spaces we’ve used materials such as logs and wood benches, but inside, we’ve explored a larger array of materials including wire and styrofoam which we discovered is less than ideal because “it was moving” when we walked on it as Violet pointed out.

Picture
For the rest of the week we will explore planning a building project, such as an obstacle course, creating blueprints and brainstorming about new materials.
