It has  been months since we have have seen, Cedar and it is so wonderful to have her back in the classroom with us! The children welcomed her with I miss you and a table full of collectively made messages. We also showed her around the classroom to fill her in from where she left off. Before that all happened though we enjoyed the sunshine and fresh air in the out door classroom, as we made sand sweets and played chase.
"I’m getting the sugar for the cake. Okay, Jane! -Maxon

“I’m making a big huge cake for all of us.” Jane

“Actually, I’m making popsicles.” Janie

“They’ll melt on your tongue.” Lucia

“I want to make sure I have enough cakes for everyone.” Sylvie

“What if we could make a house birthday cupcake?” Maxon

"It’s a huge chocolate cake." Jane

"Actually that could be a giant cake with strawberries and bananas." Lucia

Little by little pattern has been relevant to our work, ideas, and interests. Earlier this week we invited the children to play with the six illustrations for the school pajama project and arrange them into a pattern for the design.  Audrey paired the images, placed them into and placed them into three lines or columns, which she concluded would be vertical stripes on the pj's. Jane followed suit with arranging them into a line but with a less obvious pattern structure. Today, Jane chose to arrange the six images (plus a duplication) into a circle. Sylvie also participated with a more scattered arrangement.

Continuing with patterns, and some ongoing exploration of shapes, we introduced mandalas today. The children were very interested in idea of filling in the shape. Jordan reminded us about the importance of slowing down and so Melanie offered two examples: the first example was of coloring in the square shape slowly, the second example was of coloring in the shape quickly. "Slow is the way to go," we concluded. And to keep your eyes on the paper!

Lastly but not lastly, Congratulations to Katie, Ben, and Sylvie on welcoming baby Graham to the world!

"I'm a big sister now. My baby's born. I hold him in the rocking chair." -Sylvie
