The Celebration

Whit's birthday celebration was the last of our Tucker Room year! Whit's whole family joined him to celebrate, bringing various flavors of delicious Nothing Bundt Cakes. It was also his sister Mary Linley's actual birthday, so the love was extra abundant! Mary Linley read Chester Van Chime Who Forgot How to Rhyme by Avery Monsen and his other sister, Bess, read When Dinosaurs Came with Everything by Elise Broach. Whit's dad read a page from a Sharks: A Mighty Bite-y History by Miriam Forster about ancient Orthacanthus sharks.

We sang Whit our birthday song, he walked around the birthday candle six times to signify his six rotations around the sun, and blew out his candle! To conclude the celebration, the birthday committee presented Whit's portrait and favorite things.
We hope you have a fantastic 6th birthday, Whit!

What Do We Know About Our Friend Ford?

During Ford's Birthday interview, the committee learned some new things about their good friend. First of all, they all believed that Ford still had a fondness for hedgehogs, but they quickly learned that he had a change of opinion: Not anymore. Hamsters, chipmunks, harp seals. Ford
He also decided that he like snakes. The committee asked some clarifying questions.
 And snakes? Whit
Poisonous or venomous? Cal
A chain snake. Not a king cobra snake Ford
It makes sense that Ford likes every snake because every snake looks the same but they all have different talents.
Zari

Ford's tastes in entertainment were also mentioned:
He kinda likes Grizzly and the Lemmings. And Spy Kids? -Whit
To round out the birthday committee and to make sure to include one of his greatest passions, we asked Ford about his favorite sports teams and he emphatically replied:
I love the Caps and the Dallas Stars, because Lily's cul-de-sac hockey team was the Dallas Stars and she was the best player.

"Because it’s for his skin. His skin. His skin is this color. I’m going to finish around his lips." Cal
Picture
"If I’m done with his skin I want to do his hair next. Wait, his hair is brown. Light brown. This is light brown." Cal
Picture
"His favorite shape is two diamonds, so let’s do 2 diamonds. You can look at my diamonds." Whit, offering help to Cal on the background of Ford's portrait

"I forgot their arms. I need purple for their uniforms." -Whit

Celebrating Ford With His Family

Ford's mom Jess, dad Wes and older sister, Lily joined us to celebrate Ford with a special treat of Dunkin' Munchkins. Then they read a few of Ford's favorite stories. Ford proudly read Blue Hat Green Hat, which his family had shared before, during his Brown Room birthday celebration. Lily read  If You Give A Moose A Muffin.  and Jess and Wes added two selections from a Curious George collection. After Ford's chosen stories, the Tucker Room sang "If It's You're Birthday and You Know It," he walked around the candle 6 times and blew it out with one big puff of air! Then it was time for the birthday committee to present his gift.

Isabelle: Her favorite color is pink. And purple too.
Zari: And blue and green.
Rawls: My favorite color is blue.
Isabelle: My favorite color is all the colors.
Rawls: Like rainbow?
Isabelle: Her favorite animal is a cat.
Zari: No, actually it is a zebra and a unicorn. Well, both of them are, but my favorite is unicorns.
Rawls: What do you like Zari?
Zari: You can figure out what I like.
Rawls: I think she likes flowers.
Zari: Only if they’re pink or green.
Isabelle: Zari, what’s your favorite food?
Zari: I have a lot of favorite foods. One of my favorites is mac and cheese.
Isabelle: I knew it!
Zari: And my second favorite is pizza. The other one is cheese burgers and ice cream.
Isabelle: What is your favorite place that you go to?
Zari: I like to go to Scramble. It’s like this jumpy place. I think everyone’s been there. Like with a trampoline any time it’s the weekend I try to beg my mommy and daddy to let me go, but they never let me so I have to wait until it’s my birthday. It’s my most favorite place and I only like the slide the best.
Ava: I’ve been to Scramble and there’s birthday parties.
Ava: What’s your favorite kind of fruit?
Zari: Oranges and bananas.

Drawing and Painting Zari's Portrait

Ava: That looks more like  an eye.
Isabelle: Her hair is curly like this. Can I draw her mouth? Her teeth are on the bottom. I know what a nose looks like. You connect it together like that.
Ava: Yes, this looks great! She looks great and having fun.
Isabelle: We can add flowers like in her picture.
Ava: That looks nice. This is hard work.
I love when she’s happy. Not when she’s sad. When she’s happy happy happy. Ava
Picture

Painting together.
Isabelle: Can I paint her first?
Ava: I want to do her lips.
Isabelle: I want to do the flowers.
Ava: It’s dark like her skin. That looks kind of like mine (eyes). Mine are like brown. Mine are really brown. I like brown eyes. Purple for her hair.
Isabelle: No, her hair’s like more darkish.
Ava: What if we colored her hair gold? My hair’s not gold. Just a touch of gold. She looks so cute.
Isabelle: She looks like a person that’s smiling.
Ava: This will be amazing. Zari will love this. I loved my portrait. My portrait’s at home.
That will look wonderful. This will look splendid for her.
Zari's a good friend. Isabelle

Zari's Favorite Things

First, drawing.
Ava: I want to make a really round circle.
Ava goes to find something to trace that is round. She finds a medium round container.
Isabelle: I want to make a perfect bowl (for the mac and cheese). Whit, can you hold this down? I’m gonna make the mac and cheese. Now can I draw the hamburger?
Rawls: Okay first I start with a circle. Then a flower seeds. There’s a little bit of a yellow thing in it
. I did a humongous leaf right here. I’m making those leaves. Oh! I did a perfect leaf. Look at this leaf (while drawing the flower).
Whit observed Zari's birthday committee and  asked if he could draw something for Zari too.
Whit: Does Zari like fish? That’s her symbol. I want to draw her symbol.
Ava: How do I get (draw) her back like this (the tail). That’s kind of nice. Can I draw the zebra now?
Whit: I’m making a real rainbow on the fish. What comes after red? Yellow? And then green? The arrow is to know where the fish is going.
Rawls: (While drawing Scramble for Zari) I’ve been here before. I’ve been to a place that’s similar. It’s called ‘Get Air’. Scramble. It sounds like scrambled eggs. Scrambled means there is some fun things. I’m gonna draw this net. I like to go to Get Air and I go to gymnastics and it’s like the same thing. It’s like a ball pit. It is super cool. It seems like there’s a rainbow and a cloud. Here’s my scramble!
Then, painting.
Rawls: Peachish. See it matches! There’s a little bit of yellow (inside of the flower).
Ava: Did you know that’s a rainbow (above the unicorn)?
Isabelle:
(While drawing Scramble). This is a door and this is a person that waits for the people to come
Whit: Wow you really remember Scramble.
Isabelle: That’s because I’ve been there.
Whit: I’ve been their five times.
Ava: I’ve been there for birthdays.
Ava: There’s a flower too. I’m making a flower for her.
Isabelle: Can I draw the oranges too? Theres a bunch. I’ll make another one because there’s a lot of oranges.
Whit: I need scissors to cut something out.
Ava: What is a copy? When we go get new paper?
Whit: No, it’s like this what we draw like when you copy what you’re drawing but another person did it.
Ava: No, it’s a machine. Did I draw ears on my zebra? Ava adds ears to her zebra.

Zari's Celebration

After sharing her vanilla and chocolate mini-cupcake birthday snack, we joined Zari, her mom, dad and little brother, Freddie, on the birthday blanket. Zari's dad read How to Catch a Mermaid by Adam Wallace and  her mom read Ice Cream Face by Heidi Woodward Sheffield. They also had a special song to share called  Peanut Butter in a Cup. Zari then walked around the birthday candle five times, blew out her candle, and finally we sang her our Tucker Room Birthday song. Zari's birthday committee presented her birthday portrait gift and the drawings of her favorite things.
The Tucker Room wishes you a very happy 5th birthday, Zari!

All About Golf With "Pop"

Picture
This week's mystery reader was Ford's grandfather, "Pop." Pop read The ABC's of Golf by Susan Greene to the Tucker children. Pop and Ford adore their golfing time together and it was so special to be able to hear more about their experiences. Pop came prepared with a full demonstration of the different kinds of golf clubs and even generously gave each child their own golf ball! Thanks so much, Pop!

Spring-Inspired Studio Experiences

5/3/2024

As the days of the Tucker Room wane, we are revisiting materials that we have used over the last three years in the studio through the lens of spring. This week, the children delighted in the experiences of collage for a last time in the Tucker Room. It is easy to see the planning and thought that went into each of their projects.

Critical Thinking

Picture
On the first day, Isabelle chose various flowers from the catalog for the center of her collage and then framed them with fabric scraps: I finished the outside edges.
She returned to her work the next day to add some enhancements: I’m trying to see if it looks good. No, that’s too tiny.
Finally on the third day, she added some finishing touches: Look what I added because they look pretty!

Picture

I used a glue stick (yesterday). Now I’m using because it didn’t stick before. -Bailee

 I forgot that I already did 2. Now I did 3. Zari
Picture
Zari: I just like it. I like it because I like the feathers and I like the flowers.
Picture
I can’t figure out how to attach this beautiful bead.
Picture
Now, all I need to do is make a frame around my flowers. Feathers for the frame because it looks nice. -Zari

Intentional Planning

I like lining them up in a line so you can see all the petals and stuff.  I put some flower petals and stuff and some other layers. - Ava

Charlton made an intentional choice in his design, beginning with blues and greens and then making a change to his plan. Jack intentionally sorted through the flower catalogs in search of his special flowers.

Ellie placed photographs of flowers in the middle of her collage base. Later, she added a border of fabric.
Whit carefully measured and cut the pieces of fabric and ribbon for his collage which depicted a sailboat. Whit chose feathers for his waves, while  Cal also added a ribbon with tassels as his ocean. Cal then added feathers for his waves.

This is a boat. The shark is pulling the bot and the wave are pulling the sharks. The shark eats the boat. They survived because the shark ate up all the pieces of the boat and the people all swam away. The feathers make it 3-D! - Whit

A Lovie for Brown Room: Sewing Update

5/1/2024

In the last lovie update, we shared the children's conversations and ideas about creating a stuffed lovie bear for the incoming Brown Room children. We last left off with the completion of their lovie pattern, and since then, its development has progressed significantly! The children have been collaborating with Brigitte to sew the lovie, and below are her notes and pictures on the process and progress of the lovie.
Looking at Lovie Patterns
Ellie: This is a wide circle. This is like the tummy, the head and the hands.
Fay looking at a printed pattern: She did different shapes, because pigs are different shapes in all parts of their body. More than one material. Maybe not a different material, but a different fabric.
Zari: You first draw what you make. You need to plan your shape before you sew.
Ellie: First you draw and then you sew. We did not do it all.  We started with one piece. One piece and then another.
