"... because it's like mud!"

Our processes from today's printing exploration -

We  continued using paint today for "block printing" on our cubby bags using a variety of materials in both three-dimensional and two-dimensional shapes. We again noticed a difference in the process of the children's work today. Cape, Lucas, Wilder, and Michael immediately were inclined to mix the colors. While children who worked on this experience on both Monday and Tuesday expressed an interest in maintaining the original color of the paints provided, today's group was all about mixing the colors together and creating a mix of colors on their bags.

Cape had a lot to say about his finished bag!
Here is his conversation when speaking about what he created:
Cape notices that the colors are changing on his bag as he begins to mix them together using a plastic egg shell.

Cape (speaking to Sam): Will you come see over here?
Cape: I'm making it soooo big!
(spreading out the very dark green color paint in a circular motion as it mixes into both light green and pink colors already printed on his bag)
It's dirty! It's a dirtiness thing. Because it's like mud!
Sam: Does it look like mud to you?
Cape: It does. I made it!
Sam: Can you see any shapes on it still?
Cape: I can. That's an animal. It's a monkey! That's eyes. (pointing at the two pink circles at the top of his bag)
Like my eyes. My eyes are blue.
Sam: What color are the monkey's eyes?
Cape: Pink!

"That's Michael!"

We continue to incorporate birthday discussions daily in the Brown Room. Our goal is to have every child participate in the planning, process, creation, and celebration of our classroom birthday's over the course of the fall season as we continue to celebrate.
This was also the perfect opportunity to involve our friend Remy in the pre-planning discussion about her birthday celebration that we will enjoy together next week!
Remy has decided that she would like the color purple to be represented in her birthday gift.
Why purple?
Remy: Purple because I don't like green.
(her previous favorite color)
Bright purple!

At this mornings meeting, we had photos of Michael's home celebration displayed in preparation for his school celebration planned for this Friday!

"That's Michael!" - Wilder
"That's Kian, that's Michael."
- Michael
"He's eating cake." - Wilder
"That's a blowing out." - Remy

(blowing out candles)
"I see Michael and mommy." - Michael
"That's my age!" - Cate
(noticing the birthday ballon number 3)
Each child's birthday gift, although focused on a message in a specific color to represent each child, will be slightly different in the way it is constructed. The process of how the birthday committees create each gift coincides with our current interests and materials being explored in our classroom. Finlay's birthday message was a blue message made of collage materials because as a whole, our class was currently exploring glue and collage.
Both Michael and Remy's messages will be made using different types of printing with objects in paint as we have spent this week learning block printing skills to personalize our cubby bags. Since many of our children have recently expressed interest in collecting natural materials in our outdoor classroom for further investigation, we decided that this would be an excellent opportunity to use items collected for printing and mark making on Remy's upcoming birthday message. She was very much so involved in the planning process today! We are so excited to begin using these natural materials in our printing process.

"It says  happy birthday."

The topic of birthdays continued during some dramatic play between Remy and Jade today. They were celebrating Auz's birthday! Auz is Jades monkey from home and he frequently visits our classroom so we all have become very familiar with him.

Remy: It's done. It says Happy Birthday.  (Remy creates a birthday message for Auz the monkey)
Jade: He's five. We need to send a present in the mailbox!
Remy: Sandwiches, cake, muffins. (Remy adds drawings onto the message to represent the food)

Jade agreed that Auz would absolutely love to receive sandwiches, cake, and muffins for his birthday.

Our Wednesday, Thursday, Friday pod visits the school Post Office.

And even begins to create their own messages in response to those that they received today!
