Her birthday gift might be the best one yet. - Lily This week, Lily, Remy and Finlay (who unfortunately couldn't continue his work throughout all of the week) worked on Cate's birthday committee. After an amazing brainstorming session on Monday, the group created a one of a kind birthday portrait that highlighted many of our focuses in the classroom lately, while expressing Cate's unique personality and her strong interest in storytelling and adventure. Lily reflected on her, Finlay's and Cate's interest in playing the "Power Ring" game together outside, which Cate invented by using her amazing imagination.... What is the power ring game? Lily: So you each have a tool and all the powers, each of them have powers in them, like putting things inside earth or crystals and something like that. And after that then you try to have them and when you’re looking for them there’s a lot of thing that try to stop you, like booby traps or something. Finlay: Or monsters. Lily: And you have to get past them to get to the hidden power ring. And then you look for them and one time in the game, Cate got executed. (*electrocuted) Cate could go on a quest.... Finlay: What if we make like wire sculptures that look like monsters that she have to dodge. And like there’s a treachery river where there’s fish that could eat her. Lily: Or we can build a small person then. Lily: Cloth! Remy: Blue cloth! Finlay: She could slide into the river. She has to hop onto airplanes and she doesn't want to fall into the river because it’s treachery. Finlay: What if they had to go through a treacherous forest? Lily: How about there's a bridge that she has to cross and she has to figure out how to cross the bridge. It's like a maze where you have to find your way out of it. Problem solving the contradiction of the static qualities of a photo and the fluidity and movement of an obstacle course or a journey Finlay: How do we do that if it’s a quest? Remy: I got a good idea. We can put the power rings beside and could go lower and she could squat down. Finlay: It’s a picture, we are building it. Remy: First, go up and then go on the first line and then go on the stool and then jump on the second line. Ines: Like an obstacle course? Lily: But that would be hard to take the picture. And if we take a video, we can’t print it out. Remy: Oh I got a good idea, we could take more pictures than one. Lily: How about she’s standing and there’s a person that’s moving along the obstacle course that looks like her. The children reflected on their previous experiences with the medium of creating stop-motion videos and decided to create a miniature stop-motion set up while also creating life-size props for Cate to wear during her "first photo shoot", which will assist in the idea to create a "mini Cate". In today's blog we would like to highlight how materials are being used by the children as a way to express not only their thoughts and ideas but also to express empathy and friendship. In this individual and complex processes to create a truly unique portrait, the children are using their knowledge and understanding of the materials and techniques to use them as a language, as a way to translate their thoughts and ideas. Mixed Media to create four power rings (feathers, pipe cleaners, wire, jewelry, yarn, leather and felt strips) Together, Lily and Remy collected materials in the Atelier and in Tucker Closet, looking for "bendable, pink and shiny" materials to braid or weave special power rings for Cate. Lily: Unicorns and power rings. She just has a lot of them. She has two of them. Finlay: I think that… this is gonna be everyone’s ideas together. Power rings are circles, right. So we could make a power ring to fit right up there (pointing to top of the picture frame). How could we make a power ring? Lily: To make two bracelets and make two braided lines and make a circle then braid them together, then tie them together and we have our ring. Lily: It’s kinda like weaving. What colors should we use? Remy: Rainbow! Pink! Finlay: Maybe it could be gooold. Remy: Pink! I knew it. Because everyone likes gold. Finlay: Even my sister and she doesn’t like any color except gold. Lily: We can actually braid is with our hands. Wire … usually thread. You know the front ground? It could be in the front and then she would hold it. Remy: It's easy to braid for me! She’s not gonna believe! These are gonna pull her socks off! That’s a beautifuller than a puddle of mud. Lily: Well, a puddle of mud is not actually beautiful. Remy: Mud is beautifuller than anything. Mine is beautifuller than mud. Everything is beautifuller than mud.
Wire and Storytelling to create a silly scary monster Remy's wire monster is inspired by "Mr. Nibbles", a fictional monster character in one of the children's favorite story books. Lily and Remy discussed the way they want the monster to look, more silly or more scary? What kind of expression should it have? They decided it should definitely have large and sharp teeth. Maybe a little bit of the monster is gonna be coming out of the tree, the wire monster. - Lily Tall like a giraffe but scary eyes. Green eyes. - Remy Red eyes, because red is scarier? - Lily His head is his whole body. - Remy  Paint to create a background Lily: The only way is, that we can do, is I think painting or drawing. What color should it be? Pink and purple! Her favorite colors! Remy: A blue bird, I mean a pink bird and then a red bird and then a blue bird. Lily: And a little bit low here should be pink and purple. And Remy, you were taking about color birds. Where will the birds be? Remy: Right in the back! Lily: So like a lot of birds on top of it? Remy: Yeah! We need white and red to make pink. - Lily And what do we need to make purple? Oh yeah, red and blue! - Remy What shade of pink to you think she'll like? I made a really light shade for now. - Lily I can't draw this but maybe you can, Remy. We could draw her! (...) And now we just need her curly good hair. Actually, she looks so beautiful. - Lily These are beautiful drawings. - Remy  Mixed Media to create a foreground and nature-inspired environment (fabric, sea shells, wood cookies, toys, rocks, moss, wire) Adding bushes or green! - Remy In the front ground could be stumps. - Lily She can jump on them. - Remy Lily and Remy sharing their ideas and work with Cate on Wednesday: Photography to create a "mini Cate" Poses where she looks like she's looking for it (the power rings) - Lily I could be like my unicorn - Cate (top left picture) Or it could be on your head. That's so silly. - Remy (top right picture) It can look like I'm walking. - Cate (bottom right picture)     Cate was excited to have her unicorn "Didi" with her in the picture, who was also wearing her own power ring, which Cate made for her. After taking her picture, "we will print it out and make it really tiny like so tiny like mouse world" - Remy. Stop-motion, digital editing and storytelling to further visualize the story of Cate's quest On Thursday, Lily and Remy created a stop-motion video, in which Cate goes on a quest, overcomes obstacles and chases monsters through a treacherous forest... What is the title of the movie? Lily: Name for a story is…. Remy: Cate is Wonder! I have a good idea! A game that’s called chase the monster. Lily: Power ring! Remy: No, there’s no power rings in it. Ines: Maybe we can combine the titles? Lily: Power rings chase the monster? Remy: No, chase the monster. No, Cate power rings chase the monster. Lily: Cate’s power rings chase the monster! I want to say words inside there! - Remy Lily and Remy's narration for their stop-motion video: "Cate’s power rings chase the monster going through the woods, over the rainbow, into the monster’s belly. There’s her walking on the stumps, in her boat. She’s going on the water. She is inside her boat, sailing the ship and going to minty island. It has mint on their faces. That’s minty island. And she leaps off and runs to minty island. And she jumped on the trees, went for the forest and then …. she ran to minty island. And now she’s running from stump to stump and that’s a monster is following her. And the monster runned after her. The name of the monster was Chasey Bite. Here is her going up and up and here is her in the carousel. And she jumped on the clouds, through the rainbow and goed through the future. Then she’s walking down to the unicorn. She’s riding down. It’s a long story." in addition to the movie, the birthday committee also took Cate's birthday portrait in the movie setting, digitally edited to enhance the pink tones in the image:  We can't wait to celebrate our dear friend, Cate, tomorrow!
