Who else is in the Brown Room?After the first few weeks of getting to know each other and our environment the children are developing a deeper interest in each other. And a few are starting to notice when other children are absent. "Where is Wilder?" (Lily), "Is Bea coming today?" (Finlay), "Why is Jade not coming today?" (Lily) Conversations about children in the Brown Room that are not at school every day brought up thoughts about online learning. On Tuesday during Morning Meeting we asked Cate where she had been on Monday (her Online Learning Day). Cate said that she had spent time with Elyse and that there was another child. And everyone had lots of questions about him. Cate: Saul. He has really curly hair. Hugh: He has a guitar. Lily: Is Saul a boy or girl? Cate: He is a boy. Lily: Does he have short or long curly hair? Cate: Long curly hair. Some remembered that we had seen Saul before on Zoom during a Sing Along for which he had brought his guitar. On the Symbol organizer we also noticed that his symbol is a guitar. We decided to invite him to another special Brown Room Sing Along this Friday. So today we made a plan for said Sing Along. After Hugh requested that we should sing the Fire Truck Song together we asked what other songs we could sing?
In order to further support the children's interest and independence we introduced our new "check in board" today. The board shows the days Monday through Friday and, represented by photos, the children that are scheduled to come in on each day. For easy and child appropriate accessibility the board will be hanging on our Brown Room door. Each child can then independently "check themselves in" by hanging up their symbol on a small hook next to their picture. This way they can identify who was scheduled for today and who is missing on their own.
Watercolors continued"Wow. It makes yellow. I didn't know that." - Finlay As an introduction to watercolors we read the book "The Dot" by Peter H. Reynolds. We discussed different kinds of brushes and what each would be good for, how watercolor paper feels rougher than other paper, and named the different colors they could choose from. A lot of the conversations that happened during painting were about the different colors that they used and how some surprised them and collaboration around helping each other out. Painting on Tuesday: Bea: All blue. Look it's all blue now. Changing. Lily: Blue! Bea: Changing (giggling) Now I'm gonna change it. And I'll put a little blue there. And we'll rinse it off and I'll put some little purple on it. It's changing to pink. Lily: Oh, you're about to use all of it. (all of the blue water color) Bea: Okay. Then I'm gonna give it to. Lily: To you. You wanna give it to me? Water, get some blue, put it on my paper. Mhh, I think I used all the colors. Hugh: I dipped in blue and then I put it here and it turned into green. Ines: How did that happen? Hugh: Uh I don't know. Because the green is under the yellow? ( He added blue on top of yellow)
Painting on Wednesday: Cate: Can I have the yellow please? Remy: Yeah. She shared with me. After Cate spilled some paint on the table. Remy: I got it. Move your jar. Cate: I got blue on it. (the spill colored the edges of her paper) Remy: I'm wiping the table where you spilled. That looks really messy. There you go. Ines: Are you using the same color or a different color? Remy: It's pink. Jade: It's not pink. It's red. Lucas: It's purple. Jade: It's red. Cate: Woaaa woa what is this color, Ines? Ines: I see it changed. It got darker. What color is it now? Cate: Yellow. Uh look. Ines: What is it? Cate: Green. I made a green dot. Painting Today: Finlay: Look, I made the water color. I made it red. Finlay: (About a watercolor that looks more orange-y in the jar and light yellow on the paper) Wow! It makes yellow. I didn't know that. Cape: Wilder, what is yours? Look at mine. Wilder: I'm using this and this and this (Pointing to different paint jars on the table). All of the paint. Wilder: I made dots. Finlay: I'm done. I'm gonna get my symbol. Finlay: I'm making a message for my mom. Ines: What is your mom's favorite color? Finlay: I don't know. Mhh. (looking at his entirely blue painting) I guess it could be blue? New York City needs keys - LilyAfter a couple weeks of exploration in our construction area we decided to change out some of the provided materials. The Brown Room has been very interested in constructing and creating buildings and cars. That inspired us to add more metal and shiny materials to the mostly wooden and fabric materials we had before.          This morning Lily and Hugh collaborated on a larger construction of their "New York City". Lily: This is a perfect rug! (adding a fabric square) Hugh: Ohhh look at all the trees that I made (observing his work) Lily: Yeah. Super cool. After adding more materials. Lily: It's New York City! New York City is looking so beautiful. Hugh: What do you think these are good for? (Showing Lily new orange and red yoghurt twist caps on the shelf) Lily: We can make pools (using the rainbow arches). And put people in the pools. There's pools in New York City. And New York City needs keys if the doors locked (adding keys). On the left Cape built a "path to the building" leading up to Sam and Wilder's construction. "I'm making steps and a big tower for going up up up. And even bigger." (Wilder) On the right is Lily and Hugh's New York City construction.  A busy and wonderful morning in the Brown Room!
