Shelly and ToadAn idea to create a GUESTHOUSE. About two weeks ago, children expressed interest in creating small items out of clay for our friend Shelly. In addition to making food out of clay, children observed that Shelly and her family did not have enough tableware for a proper table setting if they wanted to include the entire shell family in a meal. Children then began making tables, bowls and silverware for Shelly's family home. Making items for Shelly and her family sparked a new idea... Wilder thought that Shelly should have a guesthouse so that she could have visitors! After brainstorming who might come visit Shelly and thinking about distant relatives including cousins, aunts, uncles, and grandparents, Lily had a different idea. Or maybe Toad could come visit. - Lily Who is Toad? He's a frog who lives in Brown Room, but he's lost. He used to live in Tucker Room when we were in Brown Room but we saw him lots of times when we went into Tucker Room lots of times. Sometimes we borrowed him. - Lily As Lily recalled, we did used to frequently borrow Toad to spend the day with us when we were in Brown Room. Toad has lived at school for a few years and has been a friend of our class since our time here at St. John's began. Inviting Toad to visit Shelly in Tucker Room As Lily mentioned, Toad is currently lost and Brown Room is investigating where he might be hiding! When designing the guesthouse for Toad's future visits to Tucker Room, we used a photo of him to help us estimate the size of the house that we would need to construct to comfortably house Toad. After designing an initial model using blocks, Wilder, Hugh, and Jade continued the guesthouse work to create a more permanent structure that we could keep in the "Shelly Area" for her future visitors to use when coming to see her in the Tucker Room. Continuing work on the Guesthouse Over the past few days, many children have contributed to creating furniture for the home as well as adding cozy details such as carpeting, wallpaper, and curtains. Children have intentional pondered the question, what should a home include? when thinking about their creations and contributions to the guesthouse. What types of things does the guesthouse need? A couch - Remy A chair - Cate A rocking chair - Remy A refrigerator. And a freezer. - Lily For food - Saul And the oven. - Cate Living rooms having fireplaces. They go up to the chimney so the fire can go out. - Cape And a bed. - Cate The bed needs to be 14 inches big for Toad to sleep in. So when you move around when you sleep. My bed is three inches bigger than me. Or eight inches bigger. - Saul Here is a closer look at some of the furniture that was created with the intention of furnishing both the guesthouse and Shelly's family home. Although the work for the guesthouse is mostly finished, we still have LOTS of ideas for ways in which we can extend the work and create additional home designs. We plan to dive deeper into this interest in the near future. If you know anyone who has professional experience or talents in the fields of carpentry, architecture, interior design, city planning, or anything else you think could be relevant to our interests, please let us know! A TOAD IMPOSTERIn anticipation of celebrating our friend Shelly's birthday and knowing how much she loves Halloween, children wanted to create a special costume for her to wear. We took a vote and decided that Shelly should dress up as Toad for Halloween! Jack, Jade, Lucas, and Luke volunteered to create a Toad costume for Shelly. How can we create a costume for Shelly? Luke: We can measure it. Jade: We need to measure Shelly. (Luke gets a protractor and a ruler) Jade: So she’s from 0 to 7. (width) Ines: I see from her nose to her tail she’s reaching to this number. Jade: Costumes usually have a tag with a number and how big the costume is the size. Luke: My mom says the number on the costume tell you how old you need to be for the costume. How old she is (Shelly), she would need that number. We need to look for a 41 costume toad. We’re gonna make it. Lucas: Like if we traced Shelly we can make her costume. We can make the toad on top of Shelly on the drawing of Shelly. Luke: We could trace her. Jade: We could look at a picture and shape a toad. We could look at him. We could just look at a picture of toad to see what he looks like. (looks for a photo of toad in the classroom) Jade: Toad has legs but Shelly doesn’t. Luke: If we don’t have green we mix yellow and green. Jack: I add yellow. It turns red! Luke: We need yellow to make greenish.
Maybe Imposter Toad Can Fool the Brown Room! Luke: We are going to trick the Brown Room. Lucas: We are going to tell Brown Room we found Toad, but it’s really Shelly! Luke: We are going to tell them, “We saw Toad in the Brown Room”. They’re going to follow us and see Shelly dressed up as Toad. We thought about it in our brain! Lucas: They are going to definitely believe it’s Toad. She said she loves it. (referring to Shelly loving her new Toad costume) Lucas: Her mouth needs to be a frown. (to match the real Toad’s expression) Connecting with Brown RoomWe hope that our interest in Toad's disappearance can foster future connections and work with our friends in Brown Room! We had so much fun on our recent "Spooky Neighborhood Walk" together and plan to continue developing the relationship between our classrooms through future opportunities.
