Time to Celebrate! Knowing that we won't all be together at St. John's during the summertime, we have used our birthday calendar to figure out which Brown Room friends have birthdays during the summer months. The end of the school year is just around the corner, so we knew that it was time to begin planning for and celebrating those friends who have summer birthday's, starting with Lily and Gus! Happy (school) Birthday, Lily!I like rainbow! All the colors. - Lily Enjoying the newly learned technique of needle felting, the birthday committee began selecting different colors of wool roving to use to create a rainbow for Lily's birthday weaving. Elizabeth: Lily likes all the beautiful colors. Harry: I saw some rainbows at the farm. Blue, pink, yellow, light blue, and green. Dahlia: I know “over the rainbow”! (Dahlia starts singing) Elizabeth: We need orange, yellow, red... Maybe I can make a rainbow heart for Lily! - Dahlia Though the children have had a lot of exposure and practice with weaving throughout the year, it is still a challenging technique for many as it requires immense patience, focus, and persistence! Birthday committee friends often need to take a break while weaving and even recruit other friends for backup support when needed. Thank you to William and Betsy for stepping in to support your friends in creating a beautiful gift for Lily! While working as a member of a birthday committee, children have grown accustomed to creating a message to accompany the weaving gift. Dahlia, Elizabeth, and Harry agreed that paint would serve as another great medium for creating a rainbow message. What shape is a rainbow? What colors should be included? In addition to the rainbow painting, Elizabeth and Dahlia felt that the message should include unicorns - another favorite of their friend, Lily! A birthday message for Lily The CELEBRATION!
Happy (school) Birthday, Gus! Gus has been kindly reminding us that his favorite color is red for many months. So, when conducting his interview, we asked, What else do you like? I like spiders! Spiders are black but with a red name on their butt where their webs come out. A spider web is white and the spider climbs on it. It has 5 legs. A spider mouth is purple like black. Like a dark purple. And the eyes are all black. - Gus With an eye for spiders, Gus's birthday committee turned to their newfound knowledge of needle felting to produce a black and red spider for Gus's spidery, webbed birthday weaving. But first, they needed to do some research. What does a spider look like?
On to needle-felting and weaving! A Celebration!
