"We can stick pretend people to the window." - George, 4.1 years “It’s an arrangement of people.” - Will, 4.0 years "For the book fair windows!" - George, 4.1 years The Atelier was set up for the children to imagine and create their "pretend people" for the Blake Hall windows. As you may know, each class has been invited to create something for our Light and Shadow Book Fair. We will be using the windows in Blake Hall. The Rainey Room is creating "pretend people" based on our small group work (see other blogs for additional information). There were many materials on the white table, in addition to the shelves of the atelier. Will saw the materials and asked, "What could it be[come]?" After a brief conversation about our initial small groups and sharing their words with them, the children got to work. Will, Lillian, and Caroline“It’s an arrangement of people.” - Will “We need a head right here.” - Lillian
Christopher and Will Gracie and GeorgeGeorge Henri and AdalineEliza and Zoe“Hey! Where’s the belly button? There, two bows [metal pieces].” - Eliza, 3.11 years "I put tissue paper for ears." - Zoe, 3.9 years "Oooh, seaglass is transparent." - Eliza “I wanna do the arrangements.” - Pierce “Later, or on some other day, we’ll do more.” - Will There will be other opportunities to work on "people arrangements". We cannot wait for you to see them all in the window at Book Fair! We are also working on another project for Book Fair that the children thought of this week - stay tuned for more information.

“Maybe we can mix colors in light. Maybe we can mix colors in sunlight . Maybe it can glow through it.” -Henri Partially inspired by the Henri's and George's comments about mixing color and light we brought the light table into the studio for a week to expand on this by making light table arrangements. Our intention for these light table arrangements extends into the language of photography. When each child decided their light table arrangement was finished, we photographed the composition, and we have now began to exploring exploring photo editing to modify the original photo's light quality and or color. The children's choice of photograph will be displayed with their school photo by the mailboxes. The children playfully explored the materials, they chose what objects suited their vision or caught their attention, and impermanently placed them onto the light table. If they chose they rearranged some of the materials to revise their work. After looking at her first completion in photograph and asked if she wanted to change or add, Lillian chose to add some materials. Her reflection on this change: "I thought it would make it look prettier," she said.
"Light is...you know where light comes from? It comes from the sun." - Adaline, 4.0 years
Group #2 - George, Caroline, Will, Win, and Christopher "The sun is always outside, but it moves in Blake Hall like a person moves like feet. I see shadows!" - George, 4.1 years "I can see shadows on top of ourselves and there's shadows on the floor." - Caroline, 3.4 years What's creating the shadows? - Elyse "Light and darkness. You know why I think that because there's no light, but there's darkness, and real darkness...and over there is darkness and over here is light and darkness and if it's only darkness we can't see our shadows. If there's light and darkness you can see our shadows." - George "But if there's light, we can! I have my shadow already right in my arms." - Caroline How will we use our observations to decorate the windows?"The only way to decorate the window is by putting our bodies very close to the window and then you can see our shadow. We can stick pretend people to the window." - George Which materials or tools would we use to create them? "Sticks, wire, metal, straw, and wood. You know how to stick it to the window? With very strong glue. And we can hang them. Then it will stay onto the window." - George "Paper." - Win If we use Win's idea of paper or George's idea of wire, how would we know it's a shadow? - Elyse "Bend it [wire and paper]" - Caroline "I know! You could shape it like a shadow." - George Drawing as a tool for reflection on our small groups

We cannot wait to get started on our ideas for the book fair decor - we will certainly share more about this during Classroom Stories Night, on the blog after Classroom Stories Night, and know that you are always welcome to look around at the materials set up during drop-off. Classroom Stories Night and the BlogIn anticipation of Classroom Stories Night, we will be dedicating our afternoon teacher work time to preparing the presentation and materials for this evening to share with all of you.
Therefore, we will not be posting our typical blogs over the course of the next week. We thank you for your understanding and cannot wait to share more of the classroom work with all of you very soon! "It's going to be a kit." -HenriWill's birthday committee and kit. (Will's favorite color is red.) DAY 1: "It’s really tricky for you to build a kit. -Henri - Because you don’t have the pieces to be able to." -Henri DAY 2: "We keep gathering and gathering then we put the kit together." -Henri A collection of materials to explore and consider for Will's "picture kit"DAY 3: "So it's a picture kit with different pictures..." -Henri Putting the Kit to Use at Home"My kit looks so cool! It's so creative of them to give it to me. Also a very happy birthday to Adaline today! She's 4!
Reflecting on our experience in Blake HallEvery child has had the opportunity to visit Blake Hall and there are some fantastic ideas about shadows, decorations, materials, and more. We are still working on transcribing all of the amazing things that they said, and we intend to share their words, photographs, and drawings next week. So, stay tuned!
