Paper is a material that we use all of the time. Whether it is for drawing, painting, writing, photographs, books, etc., it is a regular part of our lives. How often do we stop to experiment with the properties of paper and it's (almost) endless possibilities? Paper + LightWhat happens when we add the element of light to paper? Does it change the paper? How does it change it? What can we discover? What does light help us understand about paper?
"What's a spotlight for? What does it do?" - Henri, 3.4 years "I wanna talk about translucency." - Eliza, 3.1 years Paper + Light + WaterWhen the element of water was added, we saw some similar experiments, but also the added excitement (experimentation) of layering paper in the water.

"We're dressing up." -George Paper is not an unfamiliar material or language for the children and yet when there is a room full of paper it does influence the way a person might see or interact with the material and offer moments of creativity and discovery. Here are some of the moments and interactions we observed and shared together. "It's a costume." -Henri Placed upon or wrapped around our heads... It's a hat! In process from start (play) to finish (product). Gracie's hat idea was supported with helping wrap the paper. Wrapping ourselves, covering up, and hiding... The size (width and length) and weight are essential properties for this play. It rolls... Rolls of paper extend Other ways to play, explore, and discover including sound!
Framed! Creating portraits with paper frames. How might you play with paper? Have a great weekend everyone!
Tomorrow, December 6th is ECES here at St. John's. We will have approximately 27 visiting educators who will spend time observing the classrooms, touring the school, and our fabulous KW duo (Jill and Brigitte) will present about the Guardian Project (2021-2022).
There will not be a blog tomorrow. In the meantime, here are a few photos of the children exploring paper (all types of paper) and then paper with the addition of the light table. We encourage you to look at these photos with your children and consider: - What do they remember? -What did they discover about paper? -What are the properties of paper that they explored (texture, movement, shape, translucency, transparency, thickness, weight)? -How can you change paper? -How does light change paper? -What is a collage? -How can we use paper? The school wide Thanksgiving Feast was a joyous success! The children (and families) played such integral roles in bringing it all together. The children participate in material exploration to create work that will contribute to the Thanksgiving Feast day centerpieces. For Brown Room, we took elements of our work so far this year, to include bells, collage, hand sewing (also a bit of collage), and our book fair (nature) collections, to add to the table. The children also contributed by cutting spinach and green beans. The day of provided the opportunity to stir the soup and help decorate the long feast tables with our centerpiece decorations. Then, of course, was chapel and finally soup and muffins, upon which to feast, in a "the more the merrier" type celebration.
