Construction ChallengesOn Tuesday, we introduced a new but familiar material into the construction area: tape. Using rolls of tape and blocks children made bridges and roads for matchbox vehicles. The process was fun, but presented challenges. As they navigated this experience, children had to use critical thinking and engage in a great deal of collaboration.
As the play in this area progressed, there were many crashes. As one block fell, it often brought down the other roads that were connected by the tape. The result was somewhat dystopian, but not unsatisfactory. From our reflection time: Whit - (Building with tape) was a little bit too goofy and too much crashing. Ford - Everything got knocked down Cal - It looked so weird when everything crashed. Kinda cool.
A Quick Look at Everything ElseWe have really enjoyed the beautiful weather this week. We have been playing outside and making messages and making messages outside. Of course, we always make time for drawing.
All about the letter "R"The only two letters left of our Children's Workshop Title are both Rs. The S is in the kiln. Charlton was excited to trace an R for us, and to decorate it with natural materials. Eliza wanted to learn how to make an "R" so Charlton was delighted to demonstrate how to make an "R". Making The letter "R" with Natural MaterialsUsing Natural Material to make our InitialThe CW children also had the opportunity to decorate their initial with natural materials Ellie - Brigitte where did you find all of these things? Brigitte - I found all these natural materials in nature Ellie - Did you go and get everything today? Brigitte - No, I have been collecting natural materials for a very long time. I collected the feathers when I was in France last summer, and I collected seashells when I went to the beach, I also found beautiful pieces of bark and tiny pinecones in Michigan. We also have lots of natural material in the Atelier. Ellie - I am collecting Natural materials too, and I planted your symbol (daisies) Will - After I made my "W" I can make the letter "V" (for the Alphabet chart) Eliza - I am making a straight line with the sea shells Isabelle - Watch me, I am going to fill my whole "I" Lillian - Oooh, my "L" is so pretty now Zari - Look what I found! purple rocks, I am going to decorate my "Z" with all the pretty rocks Jack - Where did you get all of this stuff? Also in the Atelier this week...In the Atelier our CW friends 'drawings were inspired by Jill's birthday flowers and the Solar Eclipse. Also, Ellie and Cal loved to write random letters together to see what silly words they could make and they asked Brigitte to read them ! They thought it was so hilarious. Needle FeltingOn Thursday morning, Isabelle and Bailee were invited to work in the Brown Room with Brigitte to demonstrate how to do needle felting. They were excellent teachers, but they wanted to do more needle felting so Brigitte offered it as an experience in CW. Bailee, Isabelle, Ellie, and Zari diligently worked on needle felting beautiful flowers. Will - Needle felting is like sewing machine, you go up and down, up and down, up and down. Isabelle - That what we said yesterday ! Ellie - Look my needle turned into an L, Brigitte take a picture of it and send it to Jill ! Cal - I am making spider man, but it doesn't look like spider man! Isabelle - I'm making a flower, I need to make the stem now. Continuing with ClayOur printing on clay process continued through last week! The printing process provided an interesting challenge. The design created by a child would be backward once it was transferred to the clay. This usually wasn't a problem, but Bailee had printed her name on the paper. How would she choose to position the letters for a product that was satisfying to her? Although the printing experience was not about making clay letters, making letters happened organically! Checking in on Construction: |
On Thursday, children requested a construction set up that we have used before: blue "water" with styrofoam "icebergs." Ford - This is Freeze Icy Land. Charlton - I built my zoo mansion there. Jack - There are a lot of animals here. Whit - Bad guys came and took them away to a dark place. A little later, there was also a tsunami. | Children often include some element of danger in their construction play. Recently, they have been adding tsunamis. We wondered what was behind this interest. What do you know about tsunamis? Ford - They're storms. Jack - Very big storms. Whit - Very big storms with waves. Charlton - There's volcanos under the sea surrounding the Galapagos Islands and surrounding the volcanoes are tsunamis. Why do you want to include tsunamis in construction? Charlton - Because it's funny. My stuffy makes a force field to protect the creatures. Whit - My stuffy does, too. My stuffy has a time stone that creates portals to escape the tsunami. Jack - Mine does, too. We share it. It seems that there's always a disaster or bad guys in construction. Why is that important when you play? Whit - It makes it more scary. Charlton - It makes it fun. Ford - It makes it fun. The rescue is the fun part. |
| Something New: |
What are the steps to making paper? Isabelle and Ellie: You rip paper and you put it in a bowl with water. Then you put it in the blender to blend it up. Brigitte - Yes, to make paper pulp! Isabelle - I feel like I am making banana bread (as she is mixing the pulp with her hands.) When it's all mix, you can put it on the a screen and make the letter "I", I put food coloring and flower petals too. |
