We also continued to think about environments for the ducks that the children have made. Carl, Cassius, Lila, Willa, Hadley, and Rose worked on weavings of canal-like colors and various textures. Hadley decided that blue transparencies were the best choice to make clean, sparkling water for her duck. Carl and Cassius used paper, and Lila, Rose, and Willa used a little bit of everything! Children also added to the clay canal that was started yesterday. Rain prevented us from going outside, but we stayed busy with games, the magnetic chalk board, and playing on the cool bridge structure that the Tucker Room has built.

Our collection of clay ducks and ducks made with found materials has grown exponentially in the last few weeks! Instead of living on top of the cubbies or in the wooden shelves, we thought we could create a better living space for these guys - and what better than recreating their natural habitat? So, today we gathered mounds of clay as well as natural materials we might find by the canal like rocks, leaves, willows, pinecones, pebbles etc. Using a long piece of cardboard shaped like the canal as a base, children constructed a replica of the canal out of these materials. Our plan is to let the materials dry out together and once finished we’ll place it on top of the Tucker Room cubbies with all of our ducks. This provocation will be on offer tomorrow and Thursday as well so Wed/Thurs. KW friends have an opportunity to add to it. In the message center, we printed out photographs of some of the children from last week before they cast their wishing rocks into the canal. We asked children if they would like to illustrate their wish or maybe a clue to their wish (if it was still a secret). Friday we'll revisit the Canal again so the rest of our friends can make their wishes. In the construction area, children worked on a structure that they asked to keep up from the Tucker Room this morning. It was a beautifully constructed and adorned bridge. This afternoon the bridge was "under construction" as children cooperatively worked together to fix any stray blocks and make some additions so it would be safe to cross. Rose, Vivienne and Willa created drawings toward the end of our day. The drawings illustrated places for the red jewels and coins to be hidden under the boys' bridge construction. Max: What can I help with, Jay? Jay: Those (adding steps before the bridge). Max: But how will people get in? Jay: It's under construction. Mac: These are spikes and the sewer is right there. Max: Yes, and this is the pipe. It's to collect the water and go into the sewer. Isn't that funny? Mac: Yes, that's very funny. Cassius: Can I help you guys? Mac: Yes. I'm the sewer man and the construction worker. Jay to Max: Get some window blocks and put them in different colors. Cassius: Announcing: You can now go on the bridge. 1 person at a time. Walk very slowly. Mac: This is my walkie talkie and this is my telephone. Whoever needs me to rebuild something can just call me. Some fun in the outdoor classroom today, too!
Trip to the CanalWe had a serious trip to take today - a trip to the canal to first check on the ducks, but also to cast our wishing rocks into the water. When we got to the canal we could hardly believe our eyes. There must have been about 15 ducks gathered together just after the second bridge! We speculated which ducks were boys, girls, mommies, daddies, brothers, sisters or friends and then continued down the canal. Along the way we spotted something that seemed far too large to be a duck. As we got closer we realized it was a blue heron! Children enjoyed quietly watching the heron for a bit before it flew away. Once we made it to a spot along the canal that seemed clear of ducks, each child threw their wishing rock into the canal. They decided to keep their wishes to themselves (just to be safe). The brick pillars have become somewhat of a traditional stop for us on our trips to the waterfront and the canal. We had enough time to stop by them on our way back to school this afternoon.
