Shelly's House: Mission Accomplished!
Thank you, Jessica Kuhn!
Being togetherLast , but certainly not least, it was a great day to spend time with friends. KW also provides an opportunity for children to interact with someone they may not have even seen during the morning. Today we read a funny story, saw children build together outside and inside, witnessed children challenging themselves on the climbing wall, and played some wild and wonderful Zingo games! Thanks to all who attended classroom stories last night. The video is posted just below this blog post!

Good morning!
Thank you so much for joining us for Classroom Stories last night! We have posted the video here for anyone who didn't get a chance to see it last night.... and for anyone who wants to see it again! Searching for Ducklings
We stopped for a short while to draw in our art journals. In their journals, some drew flowers from nearby planters, others drew canal scenes, James circled and marked familiar words on the pages, and Caleb made a green page. One thing we have been noticing since we have been challenging the children with prompts for their journals or discussing what they have and plan to make, is an increase in intentional pages in their journals. For instance, the children come to their books eager and with a plan they often articulate verbally such as Caleb today who sat down and said, "I'm going to make a green page." He then worked in only green, drawing and creating on his page. Perhaps he was inspired by all of the green seen along the canal! We hope you enjoy these photos and we'll see you soon for Classroom Stories Night where we look forward to sharing our KW slideshow with you starting at 6:30 PM. "It's a good thing we have so many materials." Caleb
Taller Than a Teacher
What's cooking? We are looking forward to spending time with families at tomorrow night's Classroom Stories evening. In preparation, children made a white bean avocado dip to snack on while viewing the slide show. We hope to see you then. In the meantime, enjoy these images! Thanking Our Neighbors at The LanternToday we delivered our thank you card, which is actually a book, to The Lantern bookshop. The volunteers at the shop were so delighted to see us and the book we made them as a thank you for their kindness on recent field trips. We remembered how nice they have been on our visits, the way they gave us two bags of books to use in our work, and how they read to us. Today's volunteers wrote in their daily record so the other volunteers would know about our visit and the thank you card-book we gave them. The children were so happy to be in the space, that they voted to forgo today's planned activities in lieu of viewing and listening to the books at the shop. We had a delightful time cozied up together in the children's window nook reading Swan Lake, David Goes to School, and other mysterious and funny tales. Enjoy the photos and have a fabulous weekend! Art Journals: Adding Layers of Complexity
Shelly's HouseThe day came when the children were able to begin building the house for Shelly! Our building expert, Gary, came to help us implement our plan with the building tools. Here's some of what was said as the children thought about the process and figured out the first steps in building Shelly's house: Through cognition, problem-solving and fine motor coordination the children attached pieces of wood to form three walls of the correct measurement. Our plan for tomorrow: assemble the walls to make the house! Art Journaling Emotions, Interests, and AspirationsWhile Louise, Sam, Lou Lou, Abby, and James were working on Shelly's house, Elena, Caleb, and Tegan created in their art journals. Before beginning our work we remembered yesterday's art journal prompts related to our favorite color and emotions. We wondered about new prompts, but it appeared yesterday's thoughts may still be coming out through the children's art. The topic of what brings us happiness weaved through our discussion as the children worked: Elena: "Going on the slide makes me happy." Tegan: "My family makes me happy. Mommy makes me happy, Saoirse makes me happy, Daddy makes me happy, and Audrey makes me happy." Caleb: "Doing the monkey bars makes me happy." The children continued painting, gluing, and collaging in their journals while talking about what makes them happy and what they like. At times this seemed conversational or contemplative and other times discussion about their interest connected to the materials selected by the children. Caleb shared an aspiration: "I want to be a scientist. I want to make electricity that won't hurt the earth...and make extinct animals live." Elena showed her pages to the group: "I put that (space stamp) there because I love outer-space. I wish I had a saucer." Tegan, showing her pages: "I don't want a title; it just says 'Tegan.'" Tegan: "I put a feather coming out go the flowers...because of a bird...it's (the flowers) are a feather blankie." Tegan (describing a page with paint scraped on): "I put colors and then more colors..." Caleb: "I'm working on taking stuff out (of my pocket) and adding it in (my journal.)" We've been noticing so much intention in the children's journal work as they think about prompts and we're looking forward to the children developing their own prompts or journal challenges. Tomorrow we'll take a different approach with this concept and play an art journal game! As it was such a beautiful day we'll leave you with these photos of the children enjoying the outdoor classroom: Welcome Back!It was great to have our Tuesday crew back today. As you can see, they got right to work building. The group was given a choice of three "Construction Challenges:" build something taller than a teacher, build something that children could fit inside, or build something with multiple rooms for various animal friends. The group agreed on, "The kid fit inside challenge." Here's some of the things they talked about as they built: Will - Hollow blocks are for the base, right? Hugh - (With smaller hollow blocks) These could be the windows. Caleb - (With cyllinder blocks) We need these to make a chimney. Lily - (Indicating a hollow block) This is the oven. It's evident that the group accomplished their mission! After building, they found they could easily fit the six or seven people who had worked on the building inside it. Builders then invited the whole class to try to fit inside... and it worked! Other building experiences took place outside where Hugh, Tommy, Will, and Caleb worked on a house. Not just any house, their structure featured a coffee pot and a television. Before the indoor building group got started, Dagny made a floor plan for her seal house that she hopes to build in the future. "I want to work in my book every day." Lou Lou
Looking ahead.....Tomorrow we will get back to building with tools. Our first task is to build a house for Shelly, the fake rock that is dear to the Rainey Children. Before we start building tomorrow, we needed to know just what size boards we would need. Lou Lou, Grace, and Louise came in to the middle room this morning to help us figure that out. Enjoy the videos and tune in tomorrow! |
