It was great to meet with a new group of KW today. We started out with familiar KW routines and traditions. Elle introduced Prater to the table setting job. The theme was jewels surrounded by more jewels. After lunch, children worked on creating their place cards. This year, one of our big ideas involves exploring the natural world. In keeping with this, the materials for the place cards were (mostly) natural materials. The rest of our indoor time was spent with activities that we loved last year. These included mandalas, two large puzzles, and stories about Miss Viola Swamp! An important part of KW is extended time in the outdoor classroom. Today children worked with watercolors on paper that had been divided into sections with tape. Once the paint dries, children can peel away the tape to reveal the negative space. Perhaps inspired by the construction across the street, children started digging and hauling sand in the wheelbarrows. Today's mission was defined as "digging to London."

We had a great first day back in KW! Cassius, the only child returning today from last year, was able to remind us of some of our "rituals and traditions" - like table setting and the moment of silence. After lunch, everyone worked on designing their place card. We'll use these to mark our places at lunch each day throughout the year. Some friends also acted out a "Moon Walker" play. Lila was the space bunny, Max the co-pilot of the rocket ship and Mac was the astronaut. The ship made a brief stop in New York City before carrying on to it's home planet of Neptune. There, the astronaut, pilot and space bunny enjoyed taking "moon walks" on the planet and returning back to their ship for warmth. We headed outside for the latter part of our day. Adventures in space continued on the playground, with Cassius joining in as well as a second pilot/astronaut. Space flying came into play using the space swing next to the rocket ship. Max and Lila created watercolors on top of paper with designs in tape. They enjoyed seeing the shapes and designs that were left once we pulled the tape off of the watercolors. Thanks everyone for a great first day!
