Book Fair PlayToday was a "Children's Choice Day." We offered several options for our small group of three children and the children added some of their ideas as well. One example was Lou Lou, as she finished lunch she said, "Leigh, I want to spend some time with you." The children engaged in imaginative play of their own miniature Book Fair. Later Leigh also opted to visit the big Book Fair downstairs. Special VisitorsSpeaking of the Book Fair, with preparations for the Book Fair and some of the elementary schools being closed for Professional Development we had the pleasure of having some extra special visitors during our outdoor time: Elena, Alexandra, and Hugh. It was especially great to see our old friends form last year's KW again! Paper LanternsAnother main exploration this afternoon was working with scissors and paper to create paper lanterns we may use as centerpieces for the upcoming Thanksgiving Feast. The lanterns give us another avenue to observe light and shadow. By the way, we have been collecting conversations on the topic of light throughout the week that we'll be sharing soon. One prominent thought so far regards the purpose of light: that it helps us see. Children have been noting a variety of types of light sources that help us see including the sun and moon. While working on the lanterns today, Lane said, "I'm going to use my favorite color, (of the choices provided,) black. I'm going to make it a shadow...a pattern." As Lane works with light, she is showing that she is also thinking about shadow suggesting her knowledge of relationship between the two. She used the strategy of first cutting a line in the paper and then cutting it into a larger shape. She and Lou Lou identified what shapes their cutouts made such as a bow and a chair. All three children showed delight as they saw their lanterns lit up over a small light we took out to give the children an example of how the lanterns would work. Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the Book Fair!
