Mixing Paints

We had two workshops going today. The first was mixing our own paint colors to use in our ongoing painting workshop. All of the children had a turn at mixing paints. Caleb and Elena even began painting with the colors they had mixed! Here's some of what the children said while mixing the colors:
CALEB - "One of my favorite colors is pink." (Adds magenta) "I made orange with yellow and magenta."
ELENA - (Mixing yellow and blue) "It's dark green." (Elena wanted light green so she added more white.) "It's working!"
CALEB - (Adding red) "It looks like blood!"
SAM - "Look at mine!"
CALEB - "I love it!"
SAM - "I mixed yellow and green and white."
GRACE - "I want red and blue 'cause I like purple."
LOU LOU - "Red and  white. It made pink!" (She added a small amount of yellow.) "It's red!"

Book Art

In our other workshop, children had the opportunity to work with mixed media in the books they've made. Grace, Louise, and Lou Lou chose to work in this area for quite some time before eventually mixing some paint colors. Each child used a different  approach and media in their work. Grace worked with markers and paint sticks, blocking out colors on the page. She then experimented with the paint sticks on various mulberry papers, quickly discovering that she could make different marks with those painted papers, as if printing on the page. Louise, who created abstract art with the paint sticks in her book, layering all of the colors, decided to glue some of Grace's painted mulberry paper scraps on top of her painting. Lou Lou worked with permanent markers and  washi tape in her book. She then stitched together a second book to take home. Both Grace and Lou Lou also glued in photos of their fashion designs from last week.

Being Together

Here are some other highlights of the children enjoying being together at the start and end of our time together today:
