We returned to the canal for more explorations, observations of the ducks, and drawing experiences. We decided to bring along our art books in addition to clip boards so children had the option of adding some canal inspirations to their books,
We had a few great opportunities to view the ducks up close. After feeding the first group of ducks we found them following us up the canal. Some of them flew to catch up with us and we got to see them in flight and landing in the water! Then we saw some ducks fly away over the bridge. In another moment, we were observing and feeding two ducks when two gulls flew down to where the ducks were, followed by two crows. Then, two geese flew overhead!
For drawing inspiration, the children chose to work in a spot where we could view the Key and Whitehurst bridges as well as the Potomac River. Will noted that the area on the other side of the Potomac is Virginia.
Lily drew markings representative of a nearby fence while James and Will drew bridges. Hugh and Tommy watercolored over previous layers in their art books.
