Our WeekLast week, we began making a "crystal curtain" that will hang in the small window above the door that leads to our outdoor classroom. There's more work to be done this week. We're hoping that the crystals will produce dancing rainbows when the sun shines through them. We will also be having a conversation about the various materials the we use in CW. We eventually will include many (all?) of these experiences in CW throughout the remaining weeks of school. We hope everyone had fun in the snow!We had fun playing in the snow-filled outdoor classroom! Once inside, we started with a snow dance. Maybe that's what made it snow Thursday night! Due to interim phone calls, we will post very short blogs this week.

What a wonderful day to play in the snow! Children shared their enthusiasm as they talked about the snowy weekend. What did you think when you saw the snow? Will - I was excited. Lillian - Daddy lifted me up to see the snow. Pierce - I went in my sister's room and I looked out the window. I was a little bit smiling. Ford - When I woke up and Lily told me there was snow and I wanted to get out of bed, run downstairs, put on my snow stuff, get the snow ball maker, run outside and play in the snow. Seon - I felt excited and I wanted to have a quick breakfast and for right into the snow. Zari -I wanted to run right outside and play in the snow. Charlton - My brother got to go sledding, but I didn't. It's not fair. Seon - On the weekend, I made so many snowmen and snowballs and threw them at my mom. Ellie - There's still snow outside. How come there's still snow if the sun is shining? Isabelle - Because it's morning. Will - There's always sun. The snow is going to last until the end of winter. Ford - My family told me there's going to be more snow on Friday!
Everyone in CW seemed disappointed that we didn't have snow over the weekend. We reflected on where the snow was and what we could do to create snow. Gracie - We love snow, but we live in DC and we don't get snow. Seon - Once it snowed in Korea. Adaline - Once I got snow on my porch. Ford - Saturday morning when I went to hockey, there was clearly snow on the ground. Isabelle - I'm going to Vail. It's going snow at Vail. Me and Reed are going to ski down the little mountain and Prater and Leigh are going to ski down the big mountain. It makes you jump! What could we do to make it snow? Seon - The weather has to be cold enough. Very cold. Ava - I know! If we sewed a white cloth and put it on a building, it would be snow! Or white stickers could be snow. Ford - That would be fake snow. Fay - We could make a snow machine! We could build it. But snow machines run out of snow. Zari - Yeah, because machines run out of things. Maybe the machine starts with rain and makes it really cold. Fay - The rain would melt the snow. Isabelle - We could wish for snow. We have rain, the wind is going to make it colder. Then we shake the leaves and then it might snow. Lillian - We have to let the rain go first. Then the wind makes it colder and we will get some snow. Ford - if we go to the store and get a bunch of ice and break it up, I'm pretty sure that will make the sky colder and it will snow. Will - Buy ice at the store and smash it up snf throw it on everyone's yard. Cal - You can buy some ice and an truck smashes all the ice and the guys that drive the truck put it on people's yards. Isabelle - I know how to make snow. You get some ice and put it in a milk shake thing (blender). It will look like snow and the snow machine can pop it up in the sky and it will fall down. There's more snow in the forecast... fingers crossed! | Snow Machines |
One of the best parts of coming back to school is getting together with our friends. Messages are one way that children connect with friends and family, and children eagerly checked their mailboxes and made new messages. | Reconnecting |
Were you excited to come back to school today? Ford - Yes, because it was backwards day. And also, I wanted to go to school because I wanted the weekend to come quicker. Isabelle and Eliza -I was excited for snack. Seon - I was excited to see my teachers. Eliza - I was excited about snack. Will - I missed everyone. Lillian - I missed everyone, too. |
The Gingerbread HouseFord has been asking to make a gingerbread house since shortly after Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, his CW teachers thought he wanted the edible version, and didn't jump on this idea. It eventually became clear that he wanted to build a gingerbread house. This was the perfect week to take on that endeavor. |

| Happy Holidays! |
Layering with LightOn Tuesday, St. John's hosted visiting educators who were given the opportunity to play with light and shadow. It is always true, that we learn from the experience of talking and working with other educators. This was evident yesterday, as St. John's teachers explored the use of multiple light sources on the shadow screen. We enjoyed the experience so much that we knew we had to share it with the children. |
Some of CW are Swifties! Once we created our scene, it was time for a mini-concert and dance party. Throughout the afternoon, children embellished the environment that was showed up on the screen. We reflected on the experience before dismissal. Cal - I saw her (Taylor Swift) two places. On the computer and on the shadow screen. Isabelle- You could go on both sides of the screen. On one side, your body would make a shadow.
Children often include elements form their life in their small world scenarios. For example, the holiday's are always a popular theme. Tuesday was Fay's fifth birthday, a fact that was reflected as she played with Seon. Seon - I made the biggest small world. This is the first day of the year. Fay - My birthday party is in there. Seon - There's a small fridge with party food. Fay - (With a miniature muffin tin) I'm going to make muffins. I'm making six. I'm counting to three, two times. That's how you count to six. I'm making blueberry muffins. Seon - There's fish in the fridge. |
