Recently, Jen worked with Will and Gracie to teach them a new clay technique - using armature to support clay sculptures. In turn, we invited them to share their knowledge with the other children. Will was enthusiastic, and kept saying, "It's almost like i'm the teacher!" He was kind, supportive, and patient with his friends, and it was a touching to watch him scaffold their learning. Win, Henri, and Pierce were receptive to WIll's guidance. They trusted him and asked him questions throughout the process. As you'll see in the dialogue below, it was a continuous back and forth conversation among the children with some additional support from Elyse.
Reflecting on the process: "I remember that you have to get a big slab, lay it down flat, and then roll. [the clay felt] compressioned. I learned that if you want to make your armature, you also have to roll...maybe you could use armature and put wire inside the clay, and you could make your armature with the clay." - Henri, 4.6 years "It was like I was the teacher. It was like I was the adult. " - Will, 4.5 years Symbol CurtainAt morning meeting, we discussed our work on "our own symbol curtain", and we recalled all the ways we've been thinking about our symbols: drawing, painting, clay, and wire. Our discussion focused on how the clay symbols are cracking and maybe clay is not the best material for our curtain. During a recent team meeting, as we reviewed the children's clay and wire symbols, an idea struck: wire and plastic tubing.
