                Water Day, Woodbuilding and Underglazing!

Happy Wednesday Water Day! Today, our Connections friends enjoyed the summer heat by cooling off in the outdoor classroom.

                                                  Underglazing

We continued working on our clay masterpieces this week and started underglazing them! The paint adds visual depth and character to the one-of-a-kind items by creating intricate colors and patterns.

Constructing with Clay
We started our day by continuing our exploration with clay. The children were interested in constructing with the clay by cutting and attaching other materials to small balls of clay.

How can we build tall?
Soren: Connecting!

Soren, Fay and Ellie collaboratively created "A HOUSE!" (Ellie) by connecting two slabs of clay with wooden popsicle sticks. Ford and Ramsey worked on cutting and reconnecting balls of clay and Louisa created a tower with a variety of materials.

With Help from Lochie and Palmer

Picture
"Looking at the thing Lochie made in Rainey Room" - Lochie

"We are to trying make robots. The problem is people starting to put on decorations that will be covered up by paper mâché so Jordan brought the thing Lochie made to show the classmates they didn't put decoration on until it was. heres another thing: Did you know that paper mâché is only made out of paper and glue and flour." - Palmer

Me and Palmer noticed that their robot was gooders so we thought we could make our robot good. We could use toilet paper rolls for the eyes. And we used a box and opened it and it looked like the mouth was chomping. - Lochie

We continued our STEM challenge today to see what types of boats we could make and how much material they could carry. For anyone at home looking for a fun project, we used tin foil and corks to make the boats. We measured buoyancy by counting the number of beads/rocks that fit in before the boat sank. Today's record is 170. See if you can top it!

Building a Better Row Boat

Picture
The word 'du jour' is: Buoyant
Buoyant: It means that something floats (Maren)

Today, after experiment with buoyancy and a number of materials, we tried to make our own functional boats. But this time, we used limited resources. The only resources available to us were tin foil, corks and wire. Our goal was to see what kind of boats we could make and measure their strength by seeing how many beads each boat could hold. While some friends had ideas of their own, others worked in groups to make their boats.

Connections June 29, 2021

We kicked off our Tuesday by continuing our exploration with wood. Today, it was Arthur, Jade, and Cape's turn to begin constructing their building.
What will you create?
A satellite that goes into space and it makes the planets move --Arthur
A  buffalo: head, body, horns --Jade
A farm... a satellite --Cape

Message Center

The message center (a table for making notes for friends and family) is always available in our classroom, as well as colorful studio materials. Many of our friends love heading over to the message center and studio table to create beautiful artifacts. The portfolio drawers are filling up quickly!

Outdoor Classroom

As always, being outside is a highlight of our day. Enjoy this quick slideshow of all our hot, sweaty faces! Good thing tomorrow is WATER DAY: It's going to be a steamy one!

Another water day!

We had fun with the sprinklers and bubbles again for water day. We also gave our animals a bath and built a sandcastle!

Clay cakes and cookies

Today we continued our exploration of clay but introduced a new color (red) and some tools! Everyone created something different out of the clay, but baked goods seemed to be the most popular.

Week 2

Happy Monday!
Today we welcomed two "new" friends to our group, Cape & Frannie, and started exploring a new material - WOOD!

During our morning meeting (after explaining to the children that we would have a new material to work with this week), we posed a question to the group; Why might we combine glue and wood together?
It will stay together! - Roman
So it won't break apart. - Fawzia

Exactly! Here were some ideas regarding what the children might be interested in creating during today's wood + glue exploration:

I can make a huge house with bears in it! - Roman
A book store. Like in Nantucket. - Frannie
A library and a art supply store. - Aida
A pizza. - Fawzia
A castle. - Mack
What did we decide to construct?
A house for mouses. - Lucas
Planes for me and Ramsey to fly. And a big ship that can transform into a rocket ship and the telescope can see all around the outer space. - Nora
A library. - Aida
A fence and steps and a castle. - Cedar

A house. - Roman
A library. - Frannie
A pizza. - Fawzia

We will continue to work on wooden structures throughout the week!

Outdoor Fun

Ending our day with some relaxation time and a quiet "listening" story ...

Clay

Picture
Today we began our exploration of clay! This week we will experiment with the material in all kinds of different ways, but today we just started off by introducing the clay. A few friends made balls, while others enjoyed stomping on the clay (especially Ramsey)! Some friends even began pointing out the qualities of the clay, such as the fact that it is cold (thanks Ragnar).

"I'm making a hamburger!" - Ragnar

Sandcastle Building

Although not every day is water day, we have been enjoying mixing a little bit of water with sand in the sandbox. Today, Ford, Ragnar, Louisa, Ramsey, Ellie, and Fay worked together to make a sandcastle. Meanwhile, some of our other friends were playing in the "boat" or sliding down the slide!

Week 2: Electric Boogalo

Picture
Welcome back to week 2! Our explorers continue to build the out the St. John's River. We all chipped in to make it even bigger than last week. But today, we noticed there were bugs in our river. Why are they here now? We weren't sure but we spent the morning carefully moving the bugs out of the river to keep them safe.

Inside we started working on our recycled material robots. They're so big, we decided to work in pairs. We have so many amazing ideas for our robots.
