Connections' Last Day of Week One!What a WEEK! We have had a blast exploring new materials, forming relationships, and LOVING camp! ClayToday marked the end of our exploration with clay. We have used clay every day this week, and whether a child was experiencing clay for the first time or the twentieth, we all enjoyed digging in and getting dirty. Our provocation for the day was to create any kind of clay sculpture, but Cedar said it best: "I'm just going to make something really cool." ConstructionAfter only one week with the children, we have identified a common love for construction! We have been building all week, and the creations have only gotten more impressive. Check out this fantastic structure largely commandeered by Jade, Sylvie, Luke, and Cedar. By the end of the day, every child had played with or added to the structure. Psst! Our love of construction has inspired our plans for next week... but you'll have to wait until then to find out what! This week has been an absolute blast; thank you for sharing your children with us! Until Monday!

Light Table CollagesToday we wrapped up our collage exploration by creating collages on the light table inspired by stained glass windows. We used cellophane paper, glass beads, and iridescent glitter on a clear base that, when dry, should be able to hang in the window as prettily as stained glass! Sharks and ShipsToday's most popular game in the outdoor classroom was jumping ship and then running from sharks! "Run! Sharks!" - Ford"Can I listen to your heart?" - RagnarWe ended the day playing doctor, having a dance party, and reading some books! It was a great end to the first week of camp.
Coil Pots, A Farm, and CrocodilesContinuing our work with clay. Today, we learned new techniques to make "Coil Pots"! That's a good coil, Nora!! - Roman Once it's finished, what could a coil pot be used for? Here were some of our ideas: Mom's jewelry, or maybe rocks, or crayons! - Nora Money - Sylvie A plant - Aida Coins - Jade Buttons for my clothes. - Roman Building. In our building/construction area, more work with blocks and train tracks continued. This seems to be a favorite area for many of us to spend our work/play time! There was also a new idea for a project! Jade and Sylvie decided to make a "house for animals" (Sylvie) or "a ranch" (Jade). There's just grass (at the farm/ranch). - Jade Crocodiles! Here is a conversation that occurred outside today where a group of children (Jade, Mack, Arthur, and Luke) were imagining and acting out a very exciting dramatic play scenario! There are crocodiles in the boat! (All) Jade: Turn the boat, turn the boat! Get in the boat! Let's swim away from the crocodile! Jade: let me check this sail for a minute. It's a ship, not a boat. A ship. Mack: this alligator is crying. Jade: because we are swimming away and they want to eat us! Jade: let me check the tadpoles Mack: check the tadpoles! Arthur: they're turning into frogs. They have legs now. They're going to eat the crocodiles. Jade: (to the tadpoles) send them (crocodiles) away! Some confusion about who is going to eat the crocodiles. Rachel: YOU are going to eat the crocodiles?! Arthur: I'm not, that sounds gross. Mack: the alligators are having tea in the water. Because they're underwater. With sugar. Also, we have a new mud kitchen!SCIENCE!! Science? Art? Why not both? Welcome to our Ice-scapades. (See what we did there?) - Sarah Water Day! Can you catch the balloon in the hat without it popping? You'll never guess the results! Now back to robots and SCIENCE!Black and WhiteToday our collages had a focus on BLACK and WHITE materials - "pearls", computer keys, marker caps, styrofoam nuggets, domino pieces, feathers and many more... Paint and BubblesHave you ever painted outside? Ford: "No! No way! Yeah!" Conversations while painting:
"Look it's like a ladder." - Ragnar commenting on Ramsey's red painting "You want to paint with me?" - Reed offering to Connor "This looks a little purple now. I made it for Kim. She's my aunt. She is gonna love it." - Ragnar observing colors mixing on the paper "Oh look it's awesome. Oh look at that. I paint it blue! This is for you and me." - Reed Robots and WildlifeIf there's one thing we love, it's robots! We can draw them! We can paint them. They even have amazing names. And after having a blast in the classroom, we went outside to build sand castles planting snap dragon seeds. Sometimes you just need to read and take a break.
First Water Day of The Summer! Today we had a fun-filled day full of sprinklers, bubbles, and sunshine! This morning we spent time at the outdoor classroom to enjoy the warm summer weather. Shortly after, we continued celebrating the great weather with strawberries and Popcorners- picnic style! Fawzia's first day of camp!On her first day at St. Johns Summer Camp, Fawzia joins us! Fawzia created a collage for her portfolio folder using a variety of materials. Her favorite part of the day was going outside and swinging on the rope swing. Exploration: Clay slabsWater Day SlideshowCollages for BreakfastToday we continued our exploration of collages, using shiny and metallic materials instead of wooden ones. Reed declared that his collage was his breakfast, and many of the others agreed. Some took a layering approach to their collages, while others carefully arranged a one dimensional work. Ramsey used mostly mirrored pieces, which allowed him to see himself in his collage! Ford, on the other hand, liked using keys, declaring, "Breakfast! Keys!" "I'm making a cake, I'm putting icing on." - RagnarWatermelon! We got to have watermelon during snack today. Most friends loved it, and many asked for seconds - or fourths! We ended the day on the playground, where we played with "boats," sand, and the slide!
We had a fabulous, if not slightly damp, second day of camp! Our day started quickly as we had morning meeting and then enjoyed an early snack before our 10:00 outdoor classroom time. We quickly discovered that it was raining too hard to go out, so we switched to playing in Blake Hall (a large space on the first floor of the church building). With beach balls, stuffed animal hide-and-go-seek, tumble mats, and more, we had a blast! Back in the classroom, we continued our exploration of clay with red and white clay. Every child enjoyed manipulating the clay and discovering new things to create. It may only be the second day of camp, but strong relationships between the children are already being forged. Whether children only just met for the first time yesterday, have never had the opportunity to be in a classroom together, or are enjoying an old friend, they are all delighting in the time spent together. Explorers - June 22, 2021Time to get our hands dirty Rain or shine, Explorers are here to have a good time! Back by popular demand, we got to use clay! Beautiful works pf art and lasting friendships are already budding here. Next week we will be working with paper mâché so please bring in any clean recycling if possible. We want more materials!! - Everyone
Water Day! We were so happy that we got to enjoy our first water day before the rain started! Collage
The finished collages will function as "name tags" for their portfolio drawers in the classroom. In these we will save any of the children's work during summer camp before sending it home with them on the last day.
