What do we know about winter? It's almost winter! Because winter is my birthday. - Thomas Maybe when it's winter there will be snow. - Eloise There will be snow when it's Christmas. - Van It's changing into Christmas. - Elizabeth Yeah, we already had Thanksgiving. - Eloise And it snows on Christmas. And make snowballs. Snow feels cold and snow feels squishy. Snow comes from the sky. - Thomas It's soft. - Nadia Snow's really cold. - Betsy The leaves go down down. The wind blows it down. Blows the leaves down. It will be winter and be so cold and wear your jacket on because it’s so chilly! And gloves. I think (the tree) is cold. - Benji We should put a coat of leaves on it. -Dahlia Transcripts of our small group conversations: Celebrating in the Brown Room As we welcome the holiday season, we've been chatting about, and exploring, winter holidays together. In celebration of Hanukkah, Tate lit her menorah during morning meeting, and shared some of her family's holiday traditions. Today, we welcomed Dahlia's family into the classroom to share their Christmas tradition of baking Danish Butter Shape Cookies. So much holiday joy! Keep your eyes peeled for an email about further opportunities for sharing family traditions!
We hope to see you at our Holiday Chapel & Singalong tomorrow at 11:30AM! Please note that you are welcome to attend whether or not it is a school day for your child. We wish you have a joyful holiday season. See you in 2024!

Monday, December 11thHappy birthday, Thomas! Did you find any green for me? - Thomas Early last week, as we prepared for Thomas' birthday committee, he kindly shared that his favorite color is green. As our friends continue to familiarize themselves with the properties, flexibility and movement of wire, we introduced it as a material for Thomas' birthday weaving. Alongside the wire, Gus, Lily and Eloise found a variety of different materials to work into the wire. First, they set to work adding beads and fabric pieces to wire, pipe cleaner and yarn. On the second day of work ...
The finished gift and message
Tuesday, December 12thHappy Birthday to our friend, Eloise! Today we celebrated our friend Eloise's third birthday. Last week, Elizabeth, William and Isa worked together as members of the birthday committee to create a birthday weaving and message for the birthday gift. Eloise shared with us that she likes not one, but two different colors - purple and pink! Both wire (a material recently introduced in the Brown Room) and different types of paper were incorporated into Eloise's birthday weaving. Using chicken wire as the loom, the children wove different types of purple and pink paper strips to create the gift. While weaving, the birthday committee made observations about the different types of materials available to work with...
Creating a Birthday Message Let's get some glue and some paper! - Elizabeth Her message is purple. And pink. - William Bringing the Wind InsideIn our last blog, we delved into the connection children have been making between the wind and the leaves as they fall off the tree. In order to strengthen the children's understanding of the leaves' movement, we set up a provocation that allowed children to experiment with the wind's effect on leaves - indoors!
Drawing the path of a falling leafTo further explore the direction, shape and speed of the leaf's path as it falls, we set up to draw their routes in partners. Lily and me work together. She climbs the ladder and I draw (the leaf), then switch. - Dahlia
Did you know that FOUR of our Brown Room friends have December birthdays?? Elizabeth celebrated her birthday this week and declared that, like Nadia, she also loves the color purple! Happy Birthday, Elizabeth. - NadiaNoah and me can say, surprise Elizabeth! - BetsyNadia, Noah, and Betsy worked together as members of Elizabeth's birthday committee to create a beautiful purple weaving and message as her gift. Although each child will receive a weaving as their birthday gift this year, during each committee we offer new materials and introduce new techniques for the children to implement during the creation of the gift. Therefore, each weaving is not only unique based on personalized color preference, but also incorporates varied materials and style of weaving. During Elizabeth's birthday committee work, WIRE was introduced to the children and used as one of the primary components of the birthday gift. We used ribbon, and wire, and materials. - Noah Throughout the process of creating this special weaving, Nadia, Noah, and Betsy were introduced to new materials, techniques and terms.
I put so many beads on it. On the wire. - Noah You have to put it on and tie it on tight. - Betsy Now it's stuck! I attach. - Nadia When thinking about making a birthday message for Elizabeth, Betsy had a suggestion that she shared with her friends. Can we do a B? A B for Elizabeth? Like a B for Betsy. - Besty Sam shared that although Betsy does start with the letter B, Elizabeth's name begins with a different letter. Can we do E? Do E for Elizabeth! - Besty Happy third birthday, Elizabeth!
