Thank you for building with me today! We have diverse materials and ideas, and I cannot wait to do it again! During the first week or two of school, we thought about "what it means do do school/be at school virtually". This included sharing our environment. Where do we sit for our zoom calls? What kind of materials do we have at home? What does your space look like? Audrey showed us her table that she has set up with materials and her comfy unicorn chair.
After a rainy day here in DC, Elyse shared a video of the water and rain she observed in her neighborhood. We each spent some time with our watercolor palette.
September brought us back to school, but not in the conventional way. This year, St. John's has a virtual classroom. Initially, we had five children: Lane and Wolf (Tucker), Audrey and Cedar (Rainey Room), and Saul (Brown Room). The first few weeks of school, we spent time getting to know each other, learning about things we have in common, thinking about what it means to be in a "virtual" classroom, and giving our virtual classroom a name. Audrey asked a great question this morning about having snack at school. I've been thinking about what it means to have school "in this way". I mentioned that the children "on campus" at St. John's will have snack, but we will not. Or maybe we could have snack together some days. A few things to contemplate: 1. What does it mean to be "on campus" at St. John's? 2. If we're not there, what does our classroom look like or feel like? 3. What do we know about doing school like this? 4. We are all St. John's students, teachers, and parents. Is our classroom different? How? Is it the same? How? 5. What should we do together here in our virtual classroom? What are your ideas, interests, or thoughts? 6. Zoom reminds me of morning meeting. What else do we do on campus that could be part of our virtual classroom? The name "Bold and Brilliant Rainbows" was chosen**Note, this name was not used beyond the month of September Audrey shared these photos of her drawing process. She was making a sign for our "Bold and Brilliant Rainbows" classroom.
