Final Day before winter break

It was an "all Rainey Room" day in the virtual classroom.  We were sad that we did not get to see Saul, but we had a great day together.  There was so much joy and silliness!  We made some messages for friends so that they would know we were thinking of them even in our time apart.

"I got a new toothbrush too!" - Sylvie
"I did that once." - Janie

Making a plan for Sylvie's birthday:
Before we see Sylvie again, Sylvie is going to have a birthday. So, maybe I can FaceTime with you for a minute to tell you happy birthday.  Can we make a plan?

[turns to Katie]
"Mommy, what PM is it that the park gets dark?" - Sylvie
Four - Katie

Unfortunately, the Zoom video for this day is completely blank.  The screen is black.

Audrey and her mom, Sarah shared an incredible game with us that they like to play at home.  You give three clues about an animal, and the other person has to guess!  We had so much fun playing this game with them!  Some animals are hard to guess, and others are a bit easier.  Sarah also read one of Audrey's favorite books for us.

We will certainly have to try playing this game together another time.

Miller Family Tradition - Celebrating Hanukkah

Saul's family was kind enough to go first for our Virtual Classroom Family Traditions.  They brought a book and some videos to share with us about Hanukkah.  Saul's dad, Jamie, shared the story of Hanukkah, and we also learned that Saul was born in Jerusalem.
"I have dreidels. And I have a book about Hanukkah Bear.” - Saul, 3.4 years

"The story of Hanukkah is the holiday that helps us to remember this miracle [the oil burned for eight nights instead of just one].  We remember it though a few traditions.  1. We light a candle on a special menorah for each of the eight nights.  We call Hanukkah the Jewish holiday of lights. 2. We eat food fried in oil.  The donuts are called sufganiyot.  3. We spin a dreidel.  They have four letters ton it from the phrase, “A big miracle happened there”.  5 We give money to people who do not have food, clothes, or a home." - Jamie

“When the donuts, when they were in the pan, they looked yummy.” - Sylvie, 3.11 years
“What flavor is it?” - Sylvie
“Vanilla.  We put strawberry jam on it.” - Riva
Raspberry jam and chocolate. - Naama, Saul's mom

What else do we have at home that can spin?

Janie brought gears.  Sylvie had a small scale, some wooden nuts and bolts, and of course, she can spin her body.  Audrey had a wooden car and green spinning top.  Saul had quite the collection of dreidels, bowls, and round objects.

“I’m making one cave for big trucks and one cave for pick up trucks.” - Saul
“Elyse, I like the thing that is on your shirt.” - Sylvie

We had the wonderful opportunity to join both Rainey Room pods via zoom to work with clay.

Sylvie, Audrey, and the rest of us.  Do you see what we put on the table? - Melanie
[child answers]
Yeah, they look like people, right? So, we are going to work today on making a person; the form of a person.  In Rainey Room B we talked about body parts.  RRB, what parts does a person have? - Melanie
[child]  Arms, head, neck…knee
So we were thinking that with all of our clay knowledge about coiling and rolling, do you think we can make a person? - Melanie
Giacomo, what was your idea of who you are going to make? - Melanie
“A friend.” - Giacomo
Picture
“It’s you [Elyse] when you were a baby.” - Sylvie
It’s me when I was a baby? - Elyse
“Yes!” - Sylvie
How did you know what I looked liked as a baby? - Elyse
“Because you’re right here [pointing to clay creation].” - Sylvie

Picture
Audrey’s thinking about her doll.  Is that a Bratz?
“Bloom doll.” - Audrey
Melanie, I’m not sure how I’m going to add a torso to your legs. - Elyse
Sylvie and Audrey, do you have any ideas about how Elyse can add a torso, a body, to my legs? - Melanie
I have her legs [holds them up]. How do I attach her body? - Elyse
“You just have to stick it on like I did when I sticked you when you were a baby on top of the turtle.” - Sylvie
Oh, Sylvie has a good pounding tool.  Does that make a good texture Sylvie?
“Yeah, it makes it flatter.” - Sylvie
[Katie] Do you want to tell Jen your secret?
“There’s a toothbrush inside there.” - Sylvie
[Katie] It’s a clothespin.
During our call, Janie brought up the conversation about why we have two Rainey Rooms.
